Junior Sailing Program
Kids having fun, making new friends, sailing, racing,
gaining new skills, and developing self-confidence.
In our Junior Sailing Program, kids from 8 to 13 years old attend on-the water classes where they learn basic OPTI sailing or racing skills.
Descriptions of the specific Junior Sailing offerings follow. The information provided will enable you to plan a sailing experience that fits your child’s interests, age, and skill level.

2008 Junior Sailing Program Descriptions
Many Classes Sold Out for 2008 Check Calendar
Level 1 OPTI Sailing - Learn the parts of a sailboat, how it works, and how to rig an OPTI. Students will have the chance to get on the water and sail around marks. Class runs for 4 consecutive days for 4 hours each day and is taught by US Sailing certified instruction on Lake Crabtree. Appropriate for complete novice sailor age 8-11. Must know how to swim. Fee $120 per session
Level 2 OPTI Sailing - Review the parts of a sailboat, how it works. Rig your own boat and sail around marks on Lake Crabtree, going upwind and downwind. Appropriate for students age 8-11 with sailing experience and are comfortable in a boat by themselves. Four days of instruction for 4 hours each day. Students should provide own snack. Will receive credit toward completion of US Sailing “Red Book.” Fee $120 per session

Wake County offers Teens (ages 12 & up) lessons in how to sail and how to race. The courses are held a Lake Crabtree and use Sunfish sailboats. For more info go to this Wake County parks and rec. link.Tiller Time - Enjoyed the sailing classes but don’t know where to go next? Come out to Vista Point on Jordan Lake and sail an OPTI alongside the Carolina Sailing Club during their summer coaching series. Coaching and drills will be provided at your level along with sailing games.
The Governor’s Cup Regatta
is a multi-class regatta sponsored by the Carolina Sailing Club. It is held on the third weekend in June at Henderson Point on Kerr Lake. The kids race in Optis on a separate course from the adults. There are OPTI green, white, blue and red fleets for kids of different ages and experience levels. The emphasis is on having fun while improving racing skills. The Jolly Jordan Junior Regatta is a one-day Opti-only regatta sponsored by the Carolina Sailing Club. In 2008, It will be held at Vista Point on Lake Jordan on July 26. This regatta is on the Youth SAYRA (South Atlantic Yacht Racing Association) circuit. In addition to our local junior sailors, we expect to have a number of sailors join us from other junior programs in NC, SC, and GA. It includes OPTI green, white, blue and red fleets. The less experienced kids have their own races. The emphasis is on having fun while improving racing skills. Lots of encouragement is part of the program.Our emphasis is on safety, having fun, and improving sailing and racing skills. Instructors are certified Small Boat Sailing Instructors by U.S. Sailing.
