Adult Sailing Classes

Carolina Sailing Foundation sponsors "Learn about Sailing" and "Learn to Sail" classes for adults and young adults taught by a US Sailing certified instructor. Classes will be at Vista Point on Lake Jordan.

Learn about Sailing:

This course will give the student a brief introduction to parts of a sailboat and then plenty of time on the water in a sailboat. The goal of this class is to have the student experience sailing and perform the various duties of crew and skipper on a dinghy sailboat.

The student may then want to continue in our Learn to Sail class.

Cost of Learn about Sailing is $50 per person and you will receive three hours of instruction about sailing.

How you schedule a class:
Contact Roy Rysdon royrysdon@bellsouth.net to schedule a class. Roy is able to schedule classes during the week, most of the Learn to Sail weekends, see below will have an associate doing Learn about Sailing.

Learn to Sail:

In this course the student will learn how to sail a small sailboat. The goal of this course is for the student to know how to get from one place to another safely in a sailboat, to safely leave a dock and return without putting the boat through the dock, and to know when it is not safe to sail for their skills. We will use a 19 foot long Flying Scot for the lessons and there will be a limit of three students per class. The book for this course is “Start Sailing Right” by US Sailing and the American Red Cross. A copy of the book will be provided for the students for reading prior to the course. Cost for this class will be $375, for Saturday and Sunday, plus boat righting if certification is desired.

What you will learn:
Wind Direction Rigging Knots/Lines
Departure Steering Stopping/Starting
Tacking Sail Trim Safety Position
Points of Sail Jibing Capsize Recovery
Overboard Recovery Landing Getting out of Irons

The student can earn the US Sailing Small Boat Certification for Winds up to 15MPH. This requires boat righting, included in price, and will be scheduled on another day in a smaller boat when the wind is 10+ mph. For Winds above 15 MPH we will need to schedule a special class when there are high winds.
